The Hartland Inn traces its history to 1906 when it was built as a hotel along the Watertown Plank Road, which was completed in 1853. The road extended 58 miles west from Milwaukee through Wauwatosa, Pewaukee, and Oconomowoc to Watertown. Throughout its first 60 years, this building was owned by a variety of parties including the Preston and Milski families and Pabst Brewing Company.
In 1964, while Margit Meier was planning a return to her home in Switzerland, she met Max Meier, the man who would become her husband. Together they opened the Hartland Inn in 1967, featuring predominantly Swiss-inspired fare. Max passed away in 1998, but Margit remained the driving force in the local icon for more than 20 years.
Tragically, a fire broke out on June 29, 2019 and caused significant damage to the interior of the restaurant and inn. With the looming task of rebuilding, Margrit sold the building in 2022, and the Inn began adding its newest chapter.
During the renovation, we were committed to retaining as much of the original materials and character as possible. By revealing the many generations of brick and masonry, while restoring as much of the original structure as possible, the story of how the building has evolved has been preserved.
Today, we celebrate the history of this iconic building, as well as its place in the Hartland community as a gathering place for exceptional food, drink and hospitality.
